Canada: a track marshal in a “critical condition”
While intervening to clear Esteban Gutierrez's car, which crashed at the end of the race, a marshal was seriously injured by the crane. Evacuated conscious from the Montreal circuit, his condition is still considered "critical".
A track marshal who was officiating at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal was airlifted to the hospital and is currently reported to be in critical condition.
After Esteban Gutierrez’s accident at the pit exit, once the race was over, a crane evacuated the Sauber. The seriously injured marshal reportedly helped stabilize the car once it was airborne before falling and being run over by the crane. Quickly on the scene, the medical service intervened to place the man on a hard board—to stabilize the spine—before sending him to the medical center of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Jacques Bouchard, the chief medical officer of the circuit, confirmed that the commissioner was in a critical condition and that he had been immediately airlifted to the Sacré Cœur Hospital, once his condition was stabilized at the medical center. He reportedly suffered numerous fractures, but not to the head, and was conscious in the helicopter taking him to the hospital.
