Sunday: Marussia and Bianchi deliver an unexpected result
Not expecting a particularly good race, the Marussia drivers are delighted with how the Canadian Grand Prix unfolded, their car proving particularly economical with the medium tires, allowing Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton to succeed with a one-stop strategy.
Jules Bianchi – 17th:
« It was good to be able to enjoy a race in dry conditions today, because we were back in the rhythm we had shown earlier in the weekend in similar conditions. It was a bit challenging knowing that we were planning a one-stop strategy and had to go so far with the medium tires, but the engineers and I stayed in contact and worked together to ensure we could manage the tire life as we needed. Although we had to be quite cautious, in the end we did 40 laps without issues, though it was nice to switch to the super-softs and be able to maintain position. I think the result is quite pleasing and we’re back where we need to be in terms of competitiveness. We hope for good things for our next step at Silverstone, where we aim for a good performance in an important race for the team. »
Max Chilton – 19th:
« We had a good start, even though we struggled in the first lap, but after a few laps we could see that our strategy was going to pay off well for us. We started with the medium tires and completed just under 40 laps. I was quite happy with the great way we managed the tires even late in the stint, so good work from my engineers who worked with me to achieve this, allowing me to still be able to push hard in the last laps before coming in to switch to the super-softs. The start of the second stint went well but later, I struggled with tire wear and was unable to defend my position against Pic. It was good to add this race to the total of those where both cars finish, and we can feel optimistic before heading to a very important race for the team and for me: our home race, the British Grand Prix. »
