Van der Garde receives a 5-place penalty for Silverstone

Giedo van der Garde has received a five-place grid penalty for the British Grand Prix, which will take place in three weeks at Silverstone. The stewards of the Canadian Grand Prix decided to penalize him because he did not respect the blue flags.

The Caterham driver was penalized with a 10-second stop-and-go after a collision with Mark Webber’s Red Bull at the hairpin while being lapped. But a few laps later, he collided again, this time with Nico Hülkenberg’s Sauber, causing the German to retire and damaging his own front wing, which forced him to retire a few corners later.

The Dutch driver did not respect the blue flags that were waved for a whole lap as explained in the stewards’ statement: « The car 21 [Van der Garde] was shown blue flags for a full lap. Car 11 [Hülkenberg] had to use DRS and all his KERS to overtake the car that was a lap down. »

As if that weren’t enough, the Caterham team was also fined 2,000 euros for an incident in the pit lane. One of the team members crossed the pit lane while Daniel Ricciardo’s Toro Rosso was approaching, and according to the stewards, even though the oncoming car was not hindered, there was a risk that the team member could be injured, which justifies the fine.
