Sunday: Vergne brings good points to Toro Rosso
Jean-Eric Vergne achieved the best result of his F1 career so far by finishing the Canadian Grand Prix in 6th place. The Frenchman is delighted with his performance. His teammate, Daniel Ricciardo, had more difficulty in this race, finishing in 15th position.
Jean-Eric Vergne – 6th place:
« Incredible! I am super happy. It’s the best result for me obviously, but also the best finishing position since Vettel’s results for the team in 2008. It’s even more satisfying because it was a normal dry race, with no incidents ahead of me, so I earned this position fairly. It’s a great result for the team as we are making progress race after race, and it’s very encouraging for the rest of the season. It wasn’t too complicated because we had the pace to maintain this position, even though we didn’t have the speed of those who were ahead. I passed Bottas and Räikkönen and from there, I managed my race, keeping an eye on Sutil who was behind me for quite a while. That meant I couldn’t relax until the checkered flag. After finishing 8th in Monaco, this result on another difficult circuit has boosted my confidence and I feel like I have progressed as a driver. We need to keep working hard on the car’s development, starting with the next race at Silverstone, so we can aim even higher than this. »
Daniel Ricciardo – 15th:
I got off to a very good start, gaining two positions off the line and then I was on the outside at turn 2, which meant Hülkenberg passed me again. Then he went wide at the chicane, I was ahead of him again, and I gained an extra place when Sutil went out. At that moment, I thought we would have a good race, but after only four laps, the car started oversteering massively, and I could no longer manage my tires. As the race went on, we tried to improve the balance of the car, and maybe we improved it slightly, but our pace was really slow. We haven’t changed much on the car since Friday, so why we were so slow remains a mystery to me for now.
