10-place grid penalty in Montreal for Grosjean
Judged responsible for his collision with Daniel Ricciardo, Romain Grosjean was penalized by the FIA stewards present in Monaco with a 10-place grid penalty for the next Grand Prix, which will take place in Montreal.
Romain Grosjean did not see the checkered flag this afternoon in Monaco. The Frenchman had to retire following his collision with Daniel Ricciardo at the port chicane braking area after the tunnel. The Lotus driver apparently missed his braking point and violently hit the rear of the Australian’s Toro Rosso.
The two men having given up, the FIA stewards were able to hear them, and the Frenchman was deemed responsible for the collision that led to Ricciardo’s retirement from the race. As he himself was no longer in the race, Grosjean was penalized for the next Grand Prix.
He will therefore have to add a 10-place penalty to his qualifying result for the Canadian Grand Prix, which will take place in two weeks on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit, the very place where he secured the second podium of his career after Bahrain 2012.
Even though the circuit on Île Notre-Dame offers more overtaking opportunities than Monaco, this penalty jeopardizes Grosjean’s weekend, and the Lotus driver will need to have a perfect weekend if he wants to salvage anything from this Grand Prix.
