Sunday: Sauber drivers on the verge of scoring points
Nico Hülkenberg at one point held the 10th place before having to concede it to Kimi Räikkönen. The German driver is disappointed to finish just outside the points. The same goes for Esteban Gutiérrez. However, both Sauber drivers hope their team can develop the car in the upcoming races.
Nico Hülkenberg – 11th:
« We couldn’t expect a miracle today, and yesterday we weren’t in the top 10 either. Today, we just lacked speed throughout the race. Unlike most other drivers, I started on softs at the new start [after the red flag], which was good at the beginning. But after the new safety car intervention, the tires never came back. The rear tires in particular degraded a lot. When I got out of the car, I could see the metal strip, so there was no longer any question as to why the pace wasn’t good enough. It’s a shame, because that point [lost to Räikkönen] could have been ours. »
Esteban Gutiérrez – 13th:
It was a real challenge to bring the car to the finish without any skirmish or accident. The first intervention of the safety car compromised our strategy, and in the end, we had to do our best with the situation. We couldn’t expect to score points, but I did my best to use every opportunity I had to gain positions. Nevertheless, it was also important not to go beyond the limit and to finish the race. I had a good new start and was able to get involved in the fight, but one of the areas we need to improve is top speed to be able to fight for positions. It was tough with the Williams in front and the Lotus behind. On the other hand, I need to work on better managing the changing conditions during qualifying.
