“Not a good qualifying” for Charles Pic
Charles Pic is experiencing some difficulties in properly adjusting the new package brought by Caterham, and this was evident during the qualifications, with the Frenchman unable to do better than the last time. He is obviously not pleased with this but remains optimistic.
Charles Pic concluded the qualifying session of the Spanish Grand Prix, which took place a few hours ago, in 22nd and last place. The French driver struggled again with his Caterham and was unable to get the most out of it.
Pic continued to have balance issues but remains optimistic and relies on hard work to prepare well for the race, as he mentioned during a press briefing organized in the Caterham motorhome: « It wasn’t a good qualification, we weren’t happy with the car’s balance all weekend. We didn’t get exactly where we needed to be for the tire temperatures, so the combination of the two meant the qualifying wasn’t good. Now, we have data, we need to analyze it, understand the new package better, I think that’s the most important thing, to already correct the situation for tomorrow and then be able to do better next time. »
He did admit, however, that it would be complicated for him to adopt his teammate Giedo van der Garde’s settings because the two men do not have the same parts at the front of the car.
Charles Pic knows that the tires will play a role in the race, especially due to their high degradation, and he expects 3 pit stops tomorrow: « I do not expect an easy race tomorrow because there will be a lot of degradation, so that’s the point we will need to try to optimize. I think two stops will be very, very tough here. I think it will be more like three. »
On the strategy side, Pic will have the choice of tires at the start, and although nothing had been decided during the press briefing, the advantage seems to lie with the Mediums: « I think the Mediums are a bit faster for the first stint. It’s very hard to say. In any case, the Mediums have a slight performance advantage and they don’t seem to degrade much more than the Hards. »
Pic will have a simple goal tomorrow, to fight with the Marussia cars of Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton.
