Sunday: Vettel claims his second victory of the year
Sebastian Vettel won the Bahrain Grand Prix with ease today, flawlessly executing the three-stop strategy devised by the Red Bull Racing team. Mark Webber, on the other hand, struggled a bit more with his tires and finished where he started, in 7th position.
Sebastian Vettel – 1st:
« It was really very pleasant at the beginning with some wheel-to-wheel battles. At the start, you don’t know if you’re going to be fast or not, because everyone is a bit scattered, including you! It’s important to stay ahead; we saw in the last race that when you get stuck behind someone, it impacts tire wear and today it was important to use the tires saved yesterday during qualifying well. I love having space in front of me, so I pushed hard to take the lead and, with the pace we had mid-race, it was quite comfortable today. Congratulations to the whole team, everyone here, at the factory behind the scenes and especially to those who worked on the strategy today; it worked as planned, so we hit the right numbers. »
Mark Webber – 7th:
The start wasn’t too bad, but we lost a lot of time in the second stint. We were aggressive in the opening laps, which allowed me to pass several drivers, but the tires didn’t really appreciate it. This meant the second stint was a disaster in terms of pace at the end, and it affected the other two stints as well. Midway through the race, I thought I could finish on the podium, but ultimately it’s all about tire management, and we had to find a good compromise between racing and preserving the tires. Others pitted a bit before me at the end, but it wasn’t enough. When you’re battling with other drivers, you ruin your tires, but if you don’t, they hold up. I had a great battle with Lewis at the end; we didn’t have any tires left, but we were fighting as best as we could.
