Kubica hopes to return to F1 after his rally experience
Despite his recent signing with Citroën for a season in rallying, Robert Kubica still hopes to return to Formula 1 one day. He says he's capable of driving a single-seater on circuits like Barcelona, but not yet on tracks that are too winding, like Monaco.
Robert Kubica, who was seriously injured in February 2011, has been away from Formula 1 since that date. Recently, after a long period of recovery and rehabilitation, the Pole completed a test with Mercedes in DTM, the German touring car championship, before eventually signing a contract with the Citroën team to compete in rallying.
However, the former Renault driver still aims to return to Formula 1 one day: « I would be willing to give all my money to make my comeback in a Formula 1 cockpit. At the moment, racing in Barcelona would be possible for me. But I wouldn’t manage it in Monaco. Of course, I would still like to be a Formula 1 driver. But if I had been told a year and a half ago that I would be where I am now, with a program in the European and World Rally Championship, I wouldn’t have believed it. I would like to return to where I was, and I think everyone would like that. It may seem strange because, even in rallying, a lot of drivers would like to stay in this discipline. But I come from Formula 1, and suddenly, everything that was my life stopped in a second. Now I know there’s nothing more valuable in life than doing what you want to do. »
Several observers were surprised to learn that Kubica had signed up to drive in rallying. Especially after his successful DTM test. The Pole explains: « The DTM was a good opportunity for me. But I think I made the right choice by going into rallying. I could have had an easier life in DTM and better chances for good results, but for me, results are not just numbers. This year, I am looking to improve my physical condition and to better myself as a driver. I hope to learn a lot in rallying, it may be the key to my future. »
