Red Bull will not keep Vettel at all costs
Sebastian Vettel is regularly mentioned as a potential future member of Scuderia Ferrari in the short to medium term. Today, he is still part of the Red Bull fold, but Dietrich Mateschitz explains that he will not try to retain the German driver at all costs if he decides to leave.
Sebastian Vettel has been part of the Red Bull family since a young age and has been dominating the small world of Formula 1 for several years. There’s no apparent reason, then, to leave the ship. However, drivers sometimes need to take on a new challenge. Michael Schumacher left Benetton at the end of 1995 to join Ferrari, chasing after its glorious past. Fernando Alonso also looked elsewhere after winning two titles with Renault. In /f1/actualite/15094-webber-aimerait-rajouter-melbourne-a-son-palmares.html, Lewis Hamilton will try to shine the star of Mercedes. It is therefore not absurd to believe that one day, Sebastian Vettel might want to do the same and decide to see if the grass is greener elsewhere. Dietrich Mateschitz, head of Red Bull, is well aware of this and explains that he will not try to retain the three-time world champion at all costs if he ever feels the desire to leave.
« If it no longer works out with us, it would be senseless to try to keep him just because of a valid contract, » explains the Austrian.
For many months, Vettel has been mentioned to join the legendary Scuderia Ferrari. Fernando Alonso has a contract there until 2016, and according to Luca di Montezemolo, there’s no question of fielding the Spaniard alongside the German driver. “I have always said that I don’t want two roosters in the henhouse, I don’t like it and it creates imbalances in the team,” he explained last October.
In 2017, Sebastian Vettel will be 28 years old. It will still be time for him to join the Italian team to open a new chapter in his career. “If I were a Formula 1 driver, my dream would certainly be to become a Ferrari driver,” declares Mateschitz.
The boss of the energy drink brand also wanted to support the other team driver: Mark Webber. Helmut Marko, the man in charge of spotting future talents for Red Bull, had not hesitated to criticize the Australian, stating that he only did well in 2 or 3 races a year. For Mateschitz, Webber is an important asset for the world champion team: « In some races, he can show his full potential. It is not easy for him to compete with Sebastian but the team guarantees equal equipment and fair treatment to both drivers. When Mark is in top form, it’s difficult for Sebastian to beat him. We are lucky to have two true number 1s. »
Here’s something to motivate Webber, who dreams of victory on his home turf next weekend. Currently, the Australian’s best result in front of his fans is a fourth place.
