Preparations for the Russian Grand Prix on track

After placing a driver on the world championship grids of Formula 1 for the first time in 2010, with Vitaly Petrov, Russia is set to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in less than two years. The circuit that will host the event will be built in the seaside city of Sochi in 2014, the same year as the Winter Olympic Games also organized by the Russian city.

The design of the Russian track was entrusted to the famous German architect Hermann Tilke. He recently confirmed to the German press agency DPA that all indicators were positive regarding the progress of the construction: “We are fully focused on the construction of the circuit at the moment. I can say that everything is going according to schedule. Everything is going well. We will be able to build the circuit on time, which means in 2014.”

The circuit is expected to be located not far from the Olympic village, where most of the Winter Olympic events will be held. The first Russian Grand Prix in the history of Formula 1 could be held in July 2014 according to initial leaks.

A driver will be particularly eager to take part in this race, and that is Vitaly Petrov, who will have the opportunity to race at home. While the future of the Russian driver seemed to dim recently due to difficulties in securing funding, his manager, Oksana Kosachenko, expressed confidence to the Russian site Rusnovosti, regarding her protégé’s chances of being on the starting grid in Sochi: “We are working hard, there are several plans, and we have a specific program. We are almost absolutely certain that Petrov will be at the start in Sochi in 2014.”
