Sunday: Toro Rosso leaves Austin without a single point
The Toro Rosso team hoped to score some points this afternoon in the United States, but Daniel Ricciardo could do no better than 12th place while Jean-Eric Vergne did not even finish due to a suspension problem.
Daniel Ricciardo – 12th:
I think I overtook more drivers in this race than in any other in my entire career! It was particularly fun at the first corner, which became my favorite spot to overtake, especially on the first lap because I managed to pass two cars at once. Until today, the weekend hadn’t gone very well and of course, I was particularly disappointed with how the qualifying session went yesterday. I was even more determined today because of that. I gave everything I had this afternoon, even though it wasn’t enough to finish in the points, but this 12th place is probably the best result we could achieve today.
At the start, the dirty part of the track was very slippery and both Marussias were able to pass and I touched one of them. I thought I had damaged my front wing, but I was able to continue because the car was fine and then I think we got the most out of the car. I was very competitive on the mediums, but once I switched to the hards, it seemed like this type of tire worked better than expected as well, which means I lost a bit of the advantage we hoped to have by doing a long first stint. But deep down, I know I did my best.
Jean-Eric Vergne – Retirement [Suspension]:
I really got off to a good start and had about a tenth of a second to decide whether to go left or right at the first corner. Everyone seemed to be going right, so I went left aiming for the apex of the hairpin, as I was much faster. But it didn’t pay off because I lost a lot of positions and got stuck behind other single-seaters and therefore couldn’t properly warm up my tires. Despite that, I was able to fight back and regain some places. Unfortunately, the suspension broke, and the team asked me to pull over rather than risk bringing it back. It’s a shame because this circuit was fun to drive.
