Is Adrian Newey the real rival of Fernando Alonso?
While Fernando Alonso believes he is not fighting so much against Sebastian Vettel as against Adrian Newey, the designer of the Red Bulls, which seem to have regained their wings, the German driver reminds him that Formula One is not just a sport of drivers but that it involves teams where everyone has a role to play.
After a more than uncertain start to the season, Formula One has seen a hierarchy take shape in recent weeks, with Red Bull once again at the top after seemingly being the hardest hit by the ban on blown diffusers that had literally given wings to the RB7 in 2011.
Thus, Sebastian Vettel remains on a series of four consecutive victories, leading 1,112 kilometers consecutively and securing two of the last three pole positions, the other being claimed by his teammate, Australian Mark Webber: « They are first and second in all the races [at least in qualifying, ed.], it’s not just Sebastian, » emphasized Fernando Alonso after the qualifying sessions.
A little later, the Spaniard stood his ground in front of the Italian media: “If you want to win the championship, you must have the same resources as your competitors. We had them before and we were at the top, but now we are behind. We are not fighting against Vettel and Webber but against Newey and his cars.” And the Ferrari driver added to the Spanish media this time: “Yes, Vettel is not a bad driver, but in the last race [in South Korea, editor’s note] his teammate was in pole position. Sebastian is a double world champion but he has a car that is in the lead no matter what.”
The shepherd’s response to the shepherdess was quick, and Sebastian Vettel did not hesitate to remind his Iberian counterpart that Formula One is a competition between teams and all their members: “We work hard, but we work as a team, and everyone is 100% committed. Everyone has their role and tries to fulfill it. Adrian [Newey], Mark [Webber], Christian [Horner], myself, I can name many names: we want to fight for this championship as a team.”
