Sauber aims for the 5th place in the constructors’ standings from Mercedes
The Sauber F1 team believes it has the ability to beat Mercedes in the final Grand Prix of the 2012 season and the Swiss team hopes to achieve this to finish in 5th place in the constructors' championship.
Thanks to the podium secured by Kamui Kobayashi and the zero points scored by Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher in Suzuka, the Sauber team is now only 20 points behind Mercedes and the 5th place in the constructors’ championship held by the German team.
The chief designer of the Sauber team, Matt Morris, told Autosport that, according to him, the Swiss team is well on its way to outpace its German rival: “We have a faster car than theirs at the moment. I doubt they can bring any major new upgrades by the end of the season, so we just need to be smart and take points from them every race weekend. There is absolutely no reason we can’t beat them.”
If Mercedes does not have any major updates by the end of the season, it will also be the case for Sauber. However, the Swiss team has introduced updates in Singapore and Japan, and Morris believes that the engineers are just beginning to uncover the potential of these new parts and that the best is yet to come: « Suzuka was the first circuit where we had all our new updates and where we could see how they worked. We believe there is still more to come through Friday’s practice sessions, and we hope that in Korea, we can extract even more. »
