Sunday: Uneventful race for Kovalainen but not for Petrov
Heikki Kovalainen managed to finish ahead of the other drivers from the "new" teams at Suzuka during the Japanese Grand Prix. The Finnish driver was pleased with the behavior and performance of his Caterham. Vitaly Petrov, on the other hand, had some issues with the KERS and the radio.
Heikki Kovalainen – 15th:
« I had a fantastic start, avoided all the problems at the first corner, and passed Glock as soon as the safety car returned to the track. I was well positioned in 11th before the first stops, and in this first stint, the car was very pleasant. I managed to keep the others behind me, and the tire wear with the soft compounds was good. We switched to the hard compounds for the second stint and, once again, the tire wear was excellent. We even considered making just one stop, but towards the end of the stint, they started to degrade, so we pitted ten laps from the finish, and from there, it was mainly about seeing the checkered flag without encountering any issues. »
Vitaly Petrov – 17th:
Initially, I had to avoid the problems in front, but I got through without issues and quickly found a good rhythm. My first stop was good, but then we lost the KERS, which cost me time. I also had a problem with the radio and couldn’t hear the calls for blue flags, and I ended up with a penalty. Considering my starting position and the KERS issue, I think I got the most out of the car today. It has been a tough weekend, but it’s great to see the team working so hard to keep moving forward and next week we’ll have another chance to keep fighting.
