A minute of applause in tribute to Sid Watkins in Singapore
The small world of Formula 1 will pay a final tribute to Professor Sid Watkins before the start of the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend.
Last week, Formula 1 lost one of its most iconic figures in the person of Professor Sid Watkins.
The reactions following this death had been numerous, and tributes will continue this weekend in Singapore. The FIA has indeed indicated that a minute of applause will be observed on the starting grid before the Grand Prix, in memory of the man who ensured the safety of drivers for 26 years on circuits worldwide.
A book of condolences has also been made available to paddock members so they can send their messages to Watkins’ loved ones. This book will later be given to the family of the neurosurgeon who passed away at the age of 84.
Upon the announcement of his passing, Jackie Stewart, triple world champion, stated that he wished for a permanent tribute to be made to the man who, over 26 years, significantly contributed to making motorsport safer than it was when he entered the F1 world in 1978. “Something must be done to acknowledge all the work Sid has done for the sport,” emphasized the Scotsman.
The FIA is on the same wavelength as the former driver: « The FIA and the FIA Institute will consider the best way to pay a permanent tribute to Professor Watkins, in recognition of his work and legacy in motor sport, » states the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile in a press release.
