Saturday: Kobayashi puts Sauber in the front row
After a strong overall performance in qualifying, with Kamui Kobayashi qualifying for the first time on the front row and Sergio Pérez matching his best Saturday performance, the Sauber drivers have just one objective for tomorrow's race: to finish on the podium.
Kamui Kobayashi – 4th and 2nd:
I’m really thrilled for the team and myself. We were really positive before arriving here, but I think it’s fair to say we didn’t expect to be second and fourth in qualifying. We’ve had good races this year, but qualifying has been our weak spot and the guys have done an amazing job of improving that. I want to thank them all. After not having time to learn during the two Friday sessions because of the rain, like everyone else, our first run on the dry track was this morning and after free practice 3, we knew we were good. I’ll be starting from the front row tomorrow and that’s very nice, but we won’t score any points with that. The podium should be the target, but to achieve that, the road is still long. We’ll have to manage our tires and strategy well, we can’t afford the slightest mistake.
Sergio Pérez – 3rd and 5th (4th on the grid):
Second and fifth are good positions for our team, and I am happy for the guys. Personally, I’m not completely satisfied because my last lap in Q3 wasn’t perfect. It will be a very complicated race tomorrow on a demanding track. I need to get a good start, and I want to fight with the drivers in front of me because I know my car will allow it. I’m clearly aiming for another podium.
