Räikkönen hopes for a normal weekend
After a satisfactory first half of the season with 5 podiums, Räikkönen hopes to continue this momentum and perhaps even step onto the top of the podium, which would be useful in the fight for the world title.
Kimi Räikkönen currently has a 48-point deficit to Fernando Alonso who is leading the championship, but the gap between the Finn and Webber, in 2nd place, is only 8 points. Proof that this season remains very open. Iceman also thinks that the world title is still within reach for him and his team.
« We still have the possibility, so why not. We will see what happens. I have as much of a chance as the others. Except for Alonso, the others are close and there are still many points to distribute. We will try, » declared the Finnish driver to the journalists present in the paddock.
Spa-Francorchamps is a special circuit in Räikkönen’s record since he has won there 4 times, which accounts for all the races he has finished there since 2004. But true to himself, the Lotus driver explains that it doesn’t make it a more special place for him than any other: « It’s not more special than any other. It’s a beautiful circuit and we often have great races, but I know it as well as the others. I’ve also had bad races. It’s not like we suddenly become good. It can also be a disaster. Hopefully, we will have a normal weekend. We should be fine, but we still don’t know. We were good at Silverstone with fast corners, so here with the same tires, we’ll see. »
Often cited as a candidate for victory since Melbourne, Lotus has so far only managed to achieve second place. « We are trying to do our best and we have not yet managed to put everything together this season. We more or less know why and we are learning to do better. I made mistakes and there were poor setup choices on Saturday. It worked well on Sunday, but not as well as hoped, and small details can make the difference, » concluded Räikkönen.
Among these little details, the double DRS that Lotus will still use on Friday morning before possibly introducing it in the race, could provide a small boost to the E20 drivers on the Ardennes rollercoaster.
