Button is not yet ready to help Hamilton in the championship

After 11 races, Jenson Button is in 7th place in the drivers’ standings with 76 points, far behind the 117 accumulated by Lewis Hamilton in the same period, which allows the 2008 world champion to hold 4th place, 47 points behind the leader, Fernando Alonso.

On the constructors’ side, the McLaren team is in second place, 53 points behind the Red Bull Racing team, and has only a one-point lead over the Lotus team. Having faced difficulties in recent races, Jenson Button has somewhat regained his form and told the Daily Telegraph that his goal remains victory, even if he might help his compatriot and teammate in the title fight: “I’ll help the team collect as many points as possible. If I’m leading a race, then I’d want to win that race. That’s what race drivers do. We don’t have a number 1 and number 2 driver in the team.”

2009 World Champion, driving a Brawn GP, Jenson Button nonetheless stated that once he is definitively out of the title race, he will support the team and Lewis Hamilton. However, he believes that moment is not imminent: “If there comes a point in this championship where I can no longer win it, then of course I would help my teammate. But there is still a lot of time before I feel I am in that position.”
