Saturday: Bad tire strategy for Sauber
The Sauber team made poor tire choices after the resumption of qualifying, which didn't allow their drivers to defend their chances to advance to Q3. Kobayashi and Pérez both fail in Q2, but they hope to move up in the race tomorrow.
Kamui Kobayashi – 9th and 12th [17th on the grid]
We went out on intermediates after the restart and it turned out to be a bad decision. I went back to the pits to switch to wet tires, but I only had time to do one fast lap and in such difficult conditions it wasn’t enough to improve and move into Q3. Before that, we had a very good chance to fight for a good position. Our pace was really good in the rain. We missed an opportunity. For tomorrow’s race, it doesn’t matter to me whether it’s dry or wet. I will start far back and I will have to fight.
Sergio Pérez – 8th and 17th [15th on the grid]
« We made the wrong decision when we chose intermediates instead of wet tires after the restart, but I also had traffic. I was driving behind Daniel Ricciardo and could barely see anything. It’s really a shame because we clearly had the pace to fight for a good position here. However, we made a mistake, and now we will try to make up for it during the race. »
