Kovalainen does not know what 2013 holds

Heikki Kovalainen joined the Caterham team (then called Lotus Racing) when he entered F1 in 2010. The Finnish driver had signed a three-year contract at the time, which will come to an end at the end of 2012.

Kovalainen is the driver from the smaller teams – Caterham, Marussia, and HRT – who stands out the most overall, and this could allow him to join a more prestigious team, as he is sometimes mentioned as a possible replacement for Massa. But the native of Suomussalmi revealed to Sky Sports that for now, he hasn’t engaged in any discussions about his future: “I haven’t spoken to any team, not even my team for now. All I know is that my contract ends this year with my current team, but for the moment I’m just focusing on getting the most out of (the car) that I have.”

The Caterham driver remains clear-headed about his chances because he knows that other drivers will block or unblock the transfer market according to their decisions: “We haven’t looked at it closely, I think it’s still too early and there are a few guys ahead of me on the list, like what Lewis (Hamilton) will do or what Michael (Schumacher) will do, this could have a significant impact on what others will do.”

But whatever happens, Heikki Kovalainen feels he has returned to his best level, and he believes his performances speak for themselves, which is promising: « We haven’t spoken to anyone at the moment, no one has spoken to us, and for now, I’m simply focusing on my performances. I think they’ve been good, I think I’ve found my place in the Formula 1 paddock, and it’s good for the future. Teams expect drivers to be performant, and I feel that’s what I’m doing right now. We’ll see what the future brings, but I think it will be good. »
