A Formula 1 Grand Prix in London’s Olympic Stadium?
A company has submitted a project to reuse the Olympic Stadium for a Formula 1 Grand Prix once the Olympic Games, scheduled for this summer, are over.
The London Olympic Stadium could be converted into the venue for a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with the race cars going around and inside the stadium – as could also be done in Sochi.
The information was revealed by the Telegraph Sport, specifying that a file had been submitted by the company Intelligent Transport Solutions for the use of the Olympic Stadium as part of a Formula 1 Grand Prix. According to the British daily, Bernie Ecclestone was consulted by this company to see if it was feasible.
The FOM boss told Telegraph Sport that he was interested but at the moment there was nothing concrete: «It’s a company that submitted a file for the use of the stadium, not to own it. They came with a plan where the Formula 1 cars could race around the stadium, inside the stadium, and outside. They wanted to make sure I was interested.»
The file submitted by Intelligent Transport Solutions is reportedly one of the four files selected for an in-depth study by the company responsible for finding a use for the Olympic Stadium once the London Games are over. The objective would be to design a route around the Olympic Stadium that would notably pass through the Olympic Park.
This is not the first time Bernie Ecclestone has shown interest in a Formula 1 Grand Prix in London, but until now, he has always admitted that from a logistical standpoint, it would be complicated to achieve. One thing is certain, if this Grand Prix materializes, it will be held alongside the British Grand Prix organized at Silverstone, and not in its place.
