Di Montezemolo: Pérez too inexperienced to join Ferrari
Luca di Montezemolo was keen to put an end to the rumors announcing Sergio Pérez as Fernando Alonso's teammate in 2013. He believes that the young Mexican does not have enough experience to drive for Scuderia Ferrari.
Sergio Pérez is currently participating in his second Formula 1 season with the Sauber team and if the young man, aged 22, feels ready to drive for a more prestigious team than Sauber, it should not be Ferrari.
Indeed, even though the Mexican driver is associated with Scuderia Ferrari through its young drivers program, the Ferrari Driver Academy, Luca di Montezemolo, the head of Ferrari, told Reuters that the Sauber driver is not yet ready to be a main driver for the Maranello team: « Pérez is a good driver but to drive you need more experience. I think he is one of the drivers with the most potential for the future but before placing a young driver in a Ferrari, I need more experience and more results. »
Luca di Montezemolo also stated that Felipe Massa’s future had not yet been decided because even though his contract expires at the end of the year, it is too early to judge his season: “We never make decisions before the second half of the season. I expect better performances from Felipe as I have already seen in Monte Carlo, because in Monte Carlo, he was among the five fastest drivers in the race and in qualifying. So I hope he continues like this. For the moment, we are not making any decisions about his future because it is too early.”
