Alonso reacts to rumors sending Vettel to Ferrari in 2014

Who will support Fernando Alonso at Ferrari in the coming years? Despite his recent good performance in Monaco and the statements by Luca Colajanni, who assured the Brazilian press that the Scuderia did not rule out continuing the adventure with Felipe Massa after 2012, the latter’s future with the Italian team continues to be the subject of many rumors, especially regarding his potential successors.

While during the Mugello tests a Spanish newspaper claimed that Mark Webber would drive for the Maranello team in 2013, in Monaco, rumors were rampant in that regard but were already considering the identity of the Australian’s successor after his stint at Ferrari, namely Sebastian Vettel.

If the German assured he hasn’t signed any agreement with Ferrari, Helmut Marko, for his part, did nothing to quell the rumors in the paddock: « 2013 is set for us, but for 2014, there is a performance clause in his contract, in his favor or ours. It depends on the standings in 2013 but, if Vettel and/or Red Bull slip in the driver and/or constructors’ championships, he could look elsewhere. »

The double reigning world champion, however, took advantage of an interview with Autosport to remind that he feels good within his current team: « I’ve worn a Red Bull helmet for almost my entire career. It’s hard to imagine another life than the one you’re used to. It would be like leaving your parents’ home. I am very happy where I am at the moment and I don’t want to go anywhere else. »

Christian Danner, former driver and commentator for RTL in Germany, believes, like many people in the paddock, that it would be suicidal to go to Ferrari as long as Alonso is there. The Spaniard also commented on the rumors during an interview with CNN, during which he does not give them more credit than usual: These are only speculations. Every year, it’s the same with Ferrari. I experienced this when I was with Renault in the past. Every year, around summer, there were always speculations: “Alonso is going to Ferrari!” I answered many questions for years, and now that I’m with Ferrari, it’s the opposite. Every year, someone is coming to Ferrari. I think you just have to learn to live with it when you are with Ferrari.
