Alonso fears that F1 may lose its credibility

If the start of the 2012 season seems to delight spectators and television viewers, opinions appear to be more reserved in the paddock, where there are fears, notably, that the credibility of the sport might suffer: “It’s a fantastic season, so unpredictable. I think people stay in front of their TVs with surprises at every race. It’s good for the audience, it’s good for the sport to draw attention to the races,” enthuses the Spaniard in an interview with CNN. However, the double world champion of 2005 and 2006 expresses some concerns about this recent evolution: “On the other hand, we could lose credibility. We cannot forgo the fact that the best teams, the best drivers, and the best strategies win races, because at the moment, from the outside, it seems that anyone can win any race.”

In the likeness of Niki Lauda, who asserted that the majority of the public wants to see world champions win, the Ferrari driver seems to regret that talent, team, and performance matter less now: It’s like a lottery. What you achieve in Formula One doesn’t happen by chance. We need to clarify the fact that if you win a race, it’s because you’ve done something better. And I don’t think, at the moment, that this is clear to everyone, the Ferrari driver believes.

The Spaniard, however, leads the driver championship with a three-point advantage, and although he’s favored to win the title by Heikki Kovalainen, the general opinion is that the native of Oviedo does not have the best car, as Fernando Alonso himself acknowledges: « We were not satisfied with the car at the beginning of the season. We didn’t have high expectations and the team tried to understand the problems as soon as possible and try to make changes. They seem to have worked, but even if we are happy with our position and the points we took today, we still know, and are honest with ourselves, that we are not fast enough for now. There is still a lot of work to do, but we think a strong reaction is coming at Ferrari. […] We have changed some ways of working on the car and it started to work. But as I said, it’s not enough, we know that and we will continue to make improvements to the car. »
