Sunday: Webber returns to success in Monaco
Mark Webber secured his first victory in 2012 this afternoon at the Monaco Grand Prix, his second in the Principality following his win in 2010. It is also the third consecutive victory for the Red Bull team in Monaco, following Webber in 2010 and Vettel in 2011. The reigning world champion delivered a strong race to ultimately finish in 4th position.
Mark Webber – Winner
This has been an incredible day; this place truly offers you memorable experiences. There were several moments during the race where I had to be incredibly focused and make sure I could capitalize on my position. A good friend texted me this morning saying, ‘You have your destiny in your hands, you’re ahead,’ and that was the case, but you can easily make mistakes here.
There were a few key moments during the stops that were interesting. Sebastian had very hot tires and was fast at one point and I couldn’t get mine to work, but once he stopped, I focused my attention on Nico and simply took care of my rear tires until the end of the race. Then, the rain came, which here is really very, very complicated. But on our side, we had composure, experience, and good teamwork. It was a tough race, but we made it. I had both hands on it today and I certainly wasn’t going to let it slip away.
Sebastian Vettel – 4th
«It would have been nice to be on the podium today. I think we had the speed for it, but in the end, we had the same strategy as the leaders, but in reverse. It was quite difficult because we were on worn tires, but we managed to do a few good laps and gained about 8 seconds, which was a lot.
After that, I was in traffic and it is difficult to overtake in Monaco, as I showed last year and Mark this year. We hoped that some leaders would make two stops, but unfortunately, Kimi made a big gap behind me, so the leaders had a clear track after their first stop. This helped them and made things more complicated for us, but we started 9th and considering the fact that it’s difficult to overtake here, gaining 5 places was a good thing. It’s really great for Mark to win here and also for the team to achieve their third consecutive victory here – it’s impressive.
