Mugello would be happy to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix
The Mugello circuit would not be opposed to hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix, following F1's return to its grounds this week for three days of private testing.
Since Tuesday, Formula 1 has been organizing three days of private testing at the Mugello circuit, owned by Ferrari. So far, the drivers have been delighted to drive on the Italian circuit – and this is giving ideas to the circuit director, Paolo Poli.
He revealed to Raisport 1 that work could be undertaken to potentially host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the coming years: «We are working to improve the circuit, to test the capacity of our infrastructure and our potential to be able to consider something bigger. The road is still long, but we don’t want to miss this opportunity.»
Fernando Alonso was thrilled on Tuesday to drive again on the Mugello and he would be delighted to participate in a Formula 1 Grand Prix on the same track: « It was a pleasure to drive again on this circuit: the first and only time was back in 2001, when I did testing for Minardi. It’s a spectacular circuit and it would be great to race on it! »
Mark Webber was also impressed by the Italian circuit: «I must say it’s a fantastic circuit. It is very demanding for the driver and very fast. I don’t know if we will ever race there in the future, you never know, but seeing the crowd here today (Tuesday) was very special. Many people came to watch us, and it is very pleasant.»
Considering the current evolution of the F1 calendar, it seems unlikely that Mugello will find a place in an already busy schedule. The only possibility could be hosting the Italian Grand Prix alternately with Monza, but for now, that doesn’t seem to be on the agenda.
