Sunday: McLaren beaten by its engine supplier
McLaren completes the success of the Mercedes brand by finishing on the podium behind Nico Rosberg. Beyond that, this podium finish for Button and Hamilton allows the English team to take the lead in both championships, which is the most important takeaway from this Chinese weekend for the Woking team.
Jenson Button – 2nd
Congratulations to Nico, he didn’t make any mistakes. But who knows what we could have done if I had a clear path ahead of me during the last relay? Our pace was really good, and the goal was to get out in front of the group of cars, which we would have achieved if we hadn’t lost time during our pit stops. What happened during my last stop is something that happens; all the other stops were good throughout the weekend, but that one wasn’t, which put me in traffic. But the pace and consistency were there, and I was able to finish second after a great battle with Sebastian. It’s a shame we weren’t able to fight for the win, but it was a fun race with many overtakes and lots of fighting. More importantly, it’s a big day for McLaren because we are leading both championships. It’s important to be consistent, and it’s nice to be back on the podium, but there are still small things to improve to do even better.
Lewis Hamilton – 3rd
« I had a great race. I’m thrilled for Nico who achieved his first victory today but also very happy for McLaren. Jenson and I were able to fight for the podium and score big points. It was a tough race. I would have liked to be able to fight with Nico and I think I could have done it if I had started from the front row. I did my best with the car. We must ensure to keep progressing. Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, Lotus, and Sauber are strong. It’s an intense championship and it will result in great races for the fans. It’s been a long time since I was last at the top of the championship but we must stay focused. I think if I keep working as I am, then the victories will come and I will continue to push for better results in the future. »
