McLaren has planned new developments for China

Martin Whitmarsh, the director of the McLaren Mercedes team, is delighted with the start of the season by his team and its two drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. But despite two strong performances in Australia and Malaysia, the Woking team knows that the field is probably closer than ever and that it cannot afford to rest on its laurels.

Lewis Hamilton has two consecutive pole positions, and Whitmarsh would like to see an MP4-27 take pole in China, but he is aware that if another team finds better solutions to improve their car, they could be ahead of McLaren.

A 150th pole position for the team would be a superb result, but a lot can happen before then. China comes after a three-week break and all the teams will have worked hard to improve their cars, including us, and it’s as simple as this: if someone has succeeded in improving their car more than we have, then they will be faster than us in China, Whitmarsh told Sky Sports News.

Despite everything, Martin Whitmarsh is confident about the chances of seeing the McLarens fight at the front because the British team has also found improvements to make to the MP4-27 for the Shanghai race.

«We need to improve our single-seater, we need to find ways to enhance performance – and fortunately, we have found some. As to whether it will be sufficient, we will see, but I think we can be pleased with the program carried out.»
