Sauber is in favor of a budget cap

A few weeks ago, Bernie Ecclestone explained that it might be time to better control team spending and impose a budget cap. There are still too many people in F1 who see the world through rose-tinted glasses. Apparently, they like to see the world as they want it to be, wonderful, and not as it is. The downside of these glasses is that they hide reality from you, explained the Formula 1 supremo very seriously.

The idea is not new and was the reason for the involvement of the three ‘new’ teams, Caterham, HRT, and Marussia. The introduction of this budget cap would therefore likely be welcome news to them. To this list, we can now add Sauber, which has added its support to Ecclestone’s proposal.

« We started with the RRA (Resource Restriction Agreement) and that was already an important step in itself, but it is far from sufficient, » explains Monisha Kaltenborn, CEO of the Swiss team, on the official F1 website.

« We must now move to the next stage and I think the future should lie in adopting a budget cap under which each team could do what they want because we all have different strengths. If you take our team, for example, we have good infrastructure and a good wind tunnel which would allow us to take advantage of that while other teams have other things. »

« Overall, I think it would make Formula 1 more interesting because it would also mean that we could use different strategies and have different approaches to the business and the sport, » adds Monisha Kaltenborn.

The negotiations for the next Concorde Agreements are the ideal time to try to push through these kinds of proposals. « I think we should take the next step next season. With the current agreements ending this year, I think it would be the right time to implement these kinds of rules. »
