Sunday: Vettel and Red Bull are satisfied with their race

After being outpaced by the McLarens in qualifying, the Red Bulls bounced back in the race. With a roaring start, Sebastian Vettel seized the opportunity offered by the safety car to leave Australia with a second-place finish. Mark Webber, on the other hand, achieved his best career result in Melbourne but narrowly missed out on the podium.

Sunday: Vettel and Red Bull are satisfied with their race

Sebastian Vettel – 2nd:

« I am very happy with myself today: I think I couldn’t have done better. I felt good in the car. Even without the safety car, I think we would have had a chance against Lewis before the end, as we were getting closer. I decided to stay on the track when he pitted. I think it was a great race, very fun.

I got off to a good start but was surprised by Nico who made a very good start and passed. I overtook him again, in a great maneuver, just on the edge. Behind Michael, I made a mistake and went wide in the first corner. He then did exactly the same thing after I got closer to him, which was a good thing.

Congratulations to McLaren and Jenson, I think he had a fantastic race and was unbeatable today. I am very happy to come in second place, it’s a lot of points and I think people didn’t expect that after yesterday. I think we had a better car during the race and it seemed to have a lot of potential, now it’s up to us to exploit it. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make today’s result possible.

Mark Webber – 4th:

There are positive things to take away from today. Qualifying was difficult, but the race pace was better today, it’s just that we didn’t have the right track position. I had a bad start – so I need to see what happened – and then I got sandwiched in the first corner. I didn’t want the race to end there: I was able to continue and then started to build my race from there. The car was a bit tricky on the soft tires in the first stint, and I wondered if it was damaged after the first corner, but then when I switched to medium tires, I got back into the race. We were a bit lucky with the safety car, and I was faster than Lewis at the end, but it’s a circuit where it’s difficult to overtake: in Malaysia, it would have been a whole different story. Today we showed that we were strong and it was a good day for Red Bull Racing, especially after yesterday, but it was a great comeback. It’s a good start.

Christian Horner, Team Principal:

After a difficult day yesterday, Sebastian and Mark both performed strongly in the race. After surviving the first corner, Sebastian made a very nice maneuver on Rosberg and then started his chase behind Michael Schumacher, who came out just ahead of him. Then, he began catching up to the McLarens, and before the safety car, he was closing in on Lewis. For his second stint, he switched to soft tires instead of mediums, and we managed to get him out in front of Hamilton. Jenson was just a little too fast, especially at the restart, but nonetheless, it was a solid comeback to finish second and get on the podium.

For Mark, after being caught by Rosberg and Alonso at the start, as soon as he had a clear track, he put his head down and, at that moment, was the fastest on the circuit. Unlike Sebastian and while he had an extra set of new tires, he opted for the medium tires. Once again, the right decision during the safety car allowed him to emerge just behind Lewis, and we could see how motivated he was in the final laps. He tried everything to overtake Lewis and be on the podium here in Australia. Unfortunately, he narrowly missed it, but it was good to finish second and fourth.
