Mateschitz: “Vettel and Webber have the same equipment”

Mark Webber will have the same chances in the fight for the title as Sebastian Vettel in 2012, according to Dietrich Mateschitz, the head of Red Bull. When asked if Webber will have the same status as his double world champion teammate, Mateschitz replied: Absolutely.

The Australian driver will therefore be able to attempt to clinch his first world championship title provided he can compete with and surpass Vettel. The only change for Webber in 2012 is the arrival of a new chief mechanic to manage his car.

“They both have the same equipment. The only difference is that Mark has a new chief mechanic,” Mateschitz told the Salzburger Nachrichten.

Mateschitz also stated that the goal of the Red Bull Racing team was to retain the two titles won in 2011: « We don’t really have any other choice but to defend our two titles. »

The boss of Red Bull has also set goals for his other Formula 1 team, Toro Rosso. He expects the Italian team to continue its progression and now aims higher by competing with Force India and Lotus F1 in particular.

«Toro Rosso will also have to improve: the team should be in the middle of the pack and fight for the 5th place with Force India, Sauber, and Lotus, » stated Mateschitz.
