James Key leaves Sauber

The Sauber F1 team announced today that James Key, who had been serving as the technical director since his arrival from Force India, will be leaving the team. James Key has decided to leave Switzerland to accept a position in the United Kingdom. He quickly reflected on the past two years.

He expressed his delight at having been able to participate in the transition of the Sauber team from a large structure dependent on a manufacturer – with BMW – to a private team.

I appreciated these two years spent working with the Sauber F1 team. It was an intense and interesting period during which we had to manage the transition from a large team to a smaller one, and everyone handled it very well. I believe the team is now well-prepared for the future and I wish them the best. I have been offered a new role in the UK, which I have decided to accept, explains James Key in a statement published on the Sauber team’s website.

Peter Sauber, the head of the eponymous team, wanted to thank James Key for the work he provided. However, this departure doesn’t concern him too much because the Swiss team decided to separate the technical responsibilities, so Key wasn’t the only one with knowledge of the car.

« A qualified team shares overall technical responsibility. This structure has proven effective in other motorsport teams. Over the past two years, James has accomplished so much for our team. Notably in the difficult transition from a constructor team (with BMW) to a private team, he has significantly contributed to ensuring the team regained stability. We would like to thank him for his efforts and wish him the best for his future, » stated Peter Sauber in the press release.
