It’s Force India’s turn to unveil its 2012 car

Presentations are speeding up this February. After McLaren on Wednesday and Ferrari just a few minutes ago, it’s Force India’s turn to unveil its 2012 car.

As with the Caterham or Ferrari, the VJM05 features an unappealing stubby nose, due to new regulations that alter the maximum height of the nose of the single-seaters. This height changes from 625 mm relative to the reference plane to 550 mm. So far, only McLaren has opted for a different solution, but observers wonder if the MP4-27 will showcase this type of nose in Jerez next week.

Nico Hülkenberg and Paul di Resta will have the mission of leading the team to fifth place globally, which is the stated goal of the Indian team’s management. At first glance, the latest creation from the Silverstone factory may not be the most beautiful F1 of recent years, but the Scottish driver hopes it will be fast. “The objective is to finish fifth in the constructors’ championship. But to achieve that, we will have to beat a constructor,” explains di Resta to Sky Sports News.

To move up a notch in the hierarchy, Force India will need to start the 2012 season better than the previous one. The team had only scored 4 points in the first five Grand Prix in 2011. “To achieve this [finishing 5th in the constructors’ championship], we will need to start the new campaign by providing the type of form we showed in the second half of 2011. I believe it’s a realistic goal, and we have the talent and determination to achieve these ambitions,” emphasizes Vijay Mallya.

The VJM05 will make its first laps this afternoon on the Silverstone circuit for the shooting of a commercial before heading to Jerez in Spain for the first winter tests taking place next week. This will also be the first time Vijay Mallya’s team participates in the first pre-season tests since the acquisition of the Spyker team in 2008.
