Herbert settles his scores with Briatore
The Briton believes he did not receive the support he deserved at Benetton.
After Nelson Piquet Jr in 2009, who stated that Briatore knew nothing about F1, it’s Johnny Herbert’s turn to settle scores with Flavio Briatore.
The former driver was Michael Schumacher’s teammate throughout the 1995 season, which was largely dominated by the German. In comparison, the British driver’s performances were lackluster, despite two successes at Monza and Silverstone.
For Herbert, the issue was not Schumacher’s overwhelming superiority, but rather Flavio Briatore. “My problem wasn’t Michael, it was Flavio,” the former driver explains in the columns of the Times.
« When Michael asked Flavio if he could do some additional tests, there was no problem. If I asked, he would say it wasn’t possible. »
The driver, now 47 years old, admits that he would not have liked to race in F1 in 2011 when testing is no longer allowed during the season. It is true that the lack of testing does not necessarily help young drivers who find themselves parachuted into F1 without having had much track time to acclimatize to driving a Formula 1 single-seater.
« They do not have enough track time, and when they get into the car, they are expected to be fast, » highlights Herbert, who will resume his role as commissioner at the Indian Grand Prix next October.
