Senna is not yet in Heidfeld’s seat
While the Lotus Renault GP team still refuses to comment on the possible replacement of the German driver by his Brazilian counterpart, it seems that not all conditions are in place for Senna to succeed Heidfeld at the wheel of the R31.
As revealed by Eddie Jordan on Monday evening on the BBC, Nick Heidfeld could be replaced for the end of the season by Bruno Senna, who was present in Enstone this Tuesday. It seems, according to the BBC, that the reasons for such a replacement would be primarily financial, as the German driver receives a salary, whereas Ayrton Senna’s nephew would bring Brazilian sponsors to a team that has been the subject of persistent rumors regarding its financial health.
Lotus Renault GP has still not confirmed or denied Eddie Jordan’s statements, with a team spokesperson stating to the German newspaper Bild that they do not comment on speculation. Meanwhile, the Finnish daily Turun Sanomat explains that the situation is complicated: the team, which would have to pay financial compensation in case of breaking a contract, is reportedly already, according to this source, behind on salary payments for the former BMW driver.
Another issue, this time concerning the confirmation of Bruno Senna. The team based in Enstone is awaiting a firm commitment from the Brazilian driver’s sponsors, as they cannot rely on mere promises or intentions. However, it seems that the prospect of Romain Grosjean possibly taking the seat of the R31 No. 9 has dampened the enthusiasm of potential investors.
The replacement of Nick Heidfeld by Bruno Senna is still far from certain, especially as the German driver does not intend to give up his seat so easily. Indeed, according to the Daily Telegraph, the 34-year-old German is considering possible legal action, arguing that his provisional 8th place in the World Drivers’ Championship, two points ahead of his teammate, Russian Vitaly Petrov, does not warrant his dismissal.
