A single DRS zone for the Belgian GP
According to Pastor Maldonado's race engineer, there will only be one DRS activation zone at Spa-Francorchamps.
Although the news has yet to be confirmed by the International Automobile Federation, Xevi Pujolar, Pastor Maldonado’s race engineer at Williams, revealed on his Twitter account that there will only be a single DRS zone on the Ardennes circuit, which will host the Belgian Grand Prix next Sunday: « The DRS zone for Spa will be after Eau Rouge. It’s a shame there isn’t a second zone on the back straight, after turn 15. »
The detection should therefore take place between turns 1 and 2, at the foot of the Eau Rouge climb, and let’s remember that to activate this aerodynamic appendage intended to aid overtaking, the chasing driver must be within one second of the driver ahead.
Since the beginning of the season, the FIA usually offers only one DRS zone, but in Canada and on the urban circuit of Valencia, a double DRS zone—with a single detection point—was decided to increase overtaking opportunities. Given its length—7004 meters—the Spa-Francorchamps circuit could have been suitable for the establishment of two DRS zones with a detection point for each, but the FIA does not seem to want to go that far.
