What cars do F1 drivers own?

In 2010, the official Formula One website featured a series of interviews entitled “The secret life of…” in which drivers discussed, among other things, the first machine or car they owned. But today, what do these young drivers, now Formula 1 stars, drive? IBNLive asked this question and compiled a non-exhaustive list of cars used by drivers when they’re not behind the wheel of their single-seaters.

So, which driver had an Audi RS6 as their first car? Who owns a Volkswagen Van? Who occasionally drives a Maserati Quattroporte to buy bread? Which world champion got tired of their Bugatti Veyron? Does Michael Schumacher have a red Mercedes SLS AMG? Find all the answers to these questions below.

Sebastian Vettel:

Jenson Button:

EXCERPT NO. 1

« During the summer, my father unknowingly changed the course of my life. He owned a small vacation home on the French Riviera, near Cannes, and had taken his whole family there. After exhausting all the pleasures of the water and the beach, I started to get really bored, and my father took me, to vary my amusements, to “la Siesta” […].

For a modest sum, one could enjoy the thrills of go-karting, and the machines looked friendly. They seemed to zoom around, and I liked that. So I did my first laps in a kart, and although I had never held a steering wheel before, I managed without any problem, even with one arm in a cast.

What had happened? In fact, nothing extraordinary. Like many vacationers, on a beautiful summer day, I did a few laps of go-karting, among other summer amusements, and that was it.

In reality, I had just discovered another world. Neither passion nor motor sport: no, all that was probably too confusing in my mind and I wasn’t aware of it. I had merely touched on something that was going to attract me irresistibly, and that stood somewhere between action, movement, violence, noise, smell, cunning, imagination, and a certain resemblance to the automobile. I couldn’t analyze all of this, but one thing was certain: those few minutes of karting had enchanted me. With a kart, one could express oneself, give free rein to impulses, fight, live.

EXCERPT NO. 2

« Not content with neglecting my classes, I’m also getting on the wrong side of the entire neighborhood, bristling at the onslaught of decibels both day and night. This new passion, a motorized and natural extension of my early experiments with the innocent machines of my childhood, takes on a predominant place in my adolescent life. […]

Initially, my parents didn’t look too unfavorably upon my new pursuits. With Grandma Lucie’s support, they bought me my first Mobylette, which still cost 2,700 francs. It’s a 103 Sport, with a cross-style handlebar and mudguard. It’s painted in black, yellow, and red, with a spiral drawn on the pulley of the belt that makes your eyes hurt when you watch it pass by. Looking back, it was pretty kitsch. But at the time, I thought it was really cool. […]

Through constant modification, my most competitive Mobylette reaches 120 km/h. We race each other through the village streets. The [beep] road, a beautiful clear straight line with a slight incline, is used as a circuit. As for Rue du Blé, […] it’s reserved for testing. The neighbors are furious. There’s especially an old man, very aggressive, who holds a grudge against us. He’s best avoided. He hides behind his hedge and throws objects at us when we pass by. One day he even threatened us by brandishing a running chainsaw in front of us with a mean look. There’s also a former legionnaire who grumbles in his beard and stations himself on the road performing karate or tai-chi movements.
