Sunday: Button and Hamilton were in their garden in Hungary

Although Lewis Hamilton dominated the first half of the Hungarian Grand Prix, it was Jenson Button who emerged victorious, taking advantage of a spin and a strategic error by his teammate to claim his 11th victory on the evening of his 200th Grand Prix.

Jenson Button – Winner

I want to say a big, big thank you to the team today. The car was an absolute joy in all conditions and we made all the right strategic decisions. We deserve this victory, and it’s a great feeling to stand next to my race engineer, Dave Robson, for his first appearance on the podium.

The race was brilliant and full of action. I had a great battle with Lewis when we were first and second. We were both driving on the limit and the gap between us fluctuated depending on the traffic. It was really a good moment and I was sorry that we couldn’t stand together on the podium at the end of it all.

It was the perfect way to celebrate my 200th Grand Prix, and the team can head into the summer break with encouragement. We know we have a good car, so let’s enjoy our holidays and come back even stronger at Spa-Francorchamps. I’m already excited about this race.

Lewis Hamilton – 4th

« Congratulations to Jenson. He pushed me to my limits and he deserves to win the race. I feel sorry for the team that we couldn’t achieve the double, but at least one of us secured the victory.

The car was really good to drive today. I think the slightly cooler conditions helped us, but the team did a fantastic job to get us where we are. We’ve now won two races in the space of a week, which is the best way to start the summer break.

I’m disappointed about my spin. I had to make a U-turn to get back in the right direction, and Paul had to go through the grass, for which I received a penalty. I apologized to him, I’m putting the penalty behind me and looking forward to the next race.

Martin Whitmarsh, Team Principal

What a way for Jenson to celebrate his 200th Grand Prix. It’s just brilliant! Fantastic! The conditions were very, very difficult this afternoon; it was easy to make mistakes, but Jenson had a great race. His subtle yet combative driving is a testament to his racing intelligence, and he truly deserves this victory.

Lewis had to pit six times this afternoon and received a penalty for forcing Paul onto the grass. He is disappointed because he would have liked to stay on the top step of the podium next to Jenson, but he accepts his penalty. He kept his composure and overtook a few other cars. His fourth-place finish gives both him and us 12 important points for the world championship.

It was McLaren’s 10th victory in Hungary, a record, and it comes on the heels of Lewis’s victory in Germany last weekend. We have won three of the last five races and scored 119 championship points in the same period. The team can now enjoy a well-deserved break before tackling the second half of the season.
