Sunday: Disappointment for Sauber who returns empty-handed
Disappointing race for the Swiss team, which missed out on points for the second time this season – except for the Australian Grand Prix where the team was disqualified. Kamui Kobayashi indeed glimpsed the points but had to make one last pit stop as his set of tires was nearing the end of its lifespan.
Kamui Kobayashi – 11th
« Not having scored a single point today is obviously a disappointment. My start was good, as was my pace at the beginning of the race. The car’s performance in the wet was good, and when we switched to slick tires, it remained reasonably good.
For a long time it seemed we could leave with points today, but then it all went wrong. When the second rain shower arrived, the team briefly considered calling me back to the pits for intermediate tires, but I felt the track was improving. That’s how I was able to move up to seventh position, but then we waited too long for the next stop. I could no longer defend my position on this set of super-soft tires, and ultimately, after the inevitable third stop, I found myself just outside the points.
Sergio Perez – 15th
« I am deeply disappointed. After the qualifications, which were good, I expected to do much better in the race. Things started to go wrong from the first lap. I had no grip at all, and I was struggling to keep the car on the track. I went wide in a corner and lost a lot of positions. In fact, I went from 10th place on the grid to 20th place in the race. At that point, I was slower than the slowest cars, and I hope we find the reasons why it was so extreme. The penalty I received only made things worse: I passed Heikki Kovalainen because he was braking very late and unfortunately there was a yellow flag. »
James Key, technical director
It was obviously a disappointing end to the race. At the start, the conditions were quite uncertain, Kamui got off to a good start. We fitted him with soft tires during his first stop but unfortunately they did not last as long as we had hoped and during the second stop we got caught in traffic. He also lost a place due to a problem during his tire change.
Unfortunately, towards the end, we had to make another stop because we couldn’t hold back those who were behind us.
Sergio quickly lost 10 places after the start and couldn’t climb back up.
