Sunday: Ricciardo finished the race ahead of Liuzzi at HRT
Mixed results for the HRT drivers. While Daniel Ricciardo achieved his best race result so far, finishing ahead of his teammate, the latter was hampered by a collision early in the race and had to pit to change the nose of his car.
Daniel Ricciardo – 18th
« Overall, I am satisfied with my race and my best result in three Grand Prix. During the race, I wasn’t sure where I was on the track because a lot of cars made pit stops, so in all honesty, I didn’t know how I was doing.
Until the end, we had a pretty good balance with the car and I was able to achieve some good times. I’m sure there are things I could have done better, so we will look at that more closely to improve, but once again, I feel like we’ve made good progress: there was a very big step forward between Silverstone and the Nürburgring, and this time, we’ve taken another step forward.
I want to get ahead of our main rivals and prove that I can go the distance in a race. The most positive thing today is that we made the right decisions for the pit stops, so we must continue and stay on this path.
Today’s race certainly gave me something to smile about before the summer break.
Vitantonio Liuzzi – 20th
« It was a tough race. We got off to a good start until someone hit me from behind coming into the chicane, causing me to spin. I lost a lot of time there and then the car’s balance was not ideal.
The rain setup was a lottery since all previous sessions were held on a dry track. We once again encountered an issue with the front wing, which resulted in the front tires suffering. We replaced the nose and the tires, but we were still experiencing significant understeer. We switched to intermediate tires when it started raining, then back to soft tires towards the end, but the balance didn’t improve much.
We knew from the start that this race would be difficult and it was, but we fought until the end. Now we must move forward during the summer break, during which we must continue developing updates for Spa.
Colin Kolles, Team Principal
Hungary is traditionally a long race and this time it was even trickier due to the changing conditions: it was important to stay on the track until the end. Liuzzi encountered a problem at the very start of the race which relegated him from 21st to the last place.
All the pit stops went well but unfortunately Tonio had more stops and had to change his nose. Overall, it was a difficult race where the rain came on several occasions but we maintained a good pace throughout the race.
The positive side is that Daniel Ricciardo achieved his best race result so far and a third solid race in a row: he learns fast. We are expecting new developments for the fast circuits of Spa and Monza, which require different aerodynamic configurations.
