Romain Grosjean would like to try a NASCAR
But the Franco-Swiss's priority remains the single-seater and returning to Formula One.
Invited to comment for the French channel AB Moteurs on the NASCAR race held this Sunday in New Hampshire, Romain Grosjean expressed his desire to try a NASCAR car one day: « Not right away but to try, yes! »
For several years, and especially since Juan Pablo Montoya’s return to the United States, more and more Formula One drivers are considering NASCAR as a possible career change, such as Jacques Villeneuve – who is reportedly looking to buy a team in the Sprint Cup -, Kimi Räikkönen, and Nelson Piquet Jr – who has been sidelined from F1 since the Singapore crash scandal.
Others simply see it as an experience to be had, as Lewis Hamilton recently did by swapping seats with Tony Stewart, a two-time champion of NASCAR’s main series.
Also questioned by a viewer about the possibility of trying a V8 Supercar in Australia, as Sébastien Bourdais did during the last race in Surfers Paradise, the Franco-Swiss responds enthusiastically: « Absolutely! »
The Lotus Renault Grand Prix test driver nevertheless keeps a sense of priorities: « It makes you really want to, there’s a way to have a lot of fun and take a few risks, so for now we’re going to try to focus on F1 and single-seater racing, but it’s true that there are many things that tempt me. That’s also why I do the Andros Trophy in the winter, because I love sliding and fun. »
Since his last Grand Prix, held in Abu Dhabi in 2009, Romain Grosjean has tried his hand at various disciplines with considerable success. He became the AutoGP champion with DAMS last year, also participating in the brand-new GT1 championship, winning two races out of four events, and competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After replacing the injured Ho-Pin Thung in GP2, the Franco-Swiss driver also conducted tests for Pirelli and on behalf of Audi in DTM at the end of last season.
The reigning GP2 Asia champion and current leader of the GP2 Series, however, admits to considering a career change to the restaurant industry after his racing career, but until then, he has a promising career to pursue in Europe before even considering transitioning to America or heading a Michelin-starred establishment.
