Ferrari must take more risks according to Alonso
The Spaniard aims for more Grand Prix victories by November, but is not thinking about the title.
Last Sunday, Fernando Alonso secured his first victory of the season, the first since October 24th last year at the Korean Grand Prix: “What a feeling to win again,” the Spaniard confides on the official Ferrari site. “And I appreciate it even more now that I’m back home in Oviedo. When a Grand Prix ends, there’s a surge of emotion, but then there are so many things to do, with press conferences and debriefings, that you have to stay very focused. But the next day, you wake up happy, and there’s a really special feeling that goes with it, and I must say I still feel it now.”
The driver does not put the cart before the horse regarding the rest of the championship. This victory will not change our approach to the upcoming races. We have to be realistic because we are 92 points behind in the standings, and it’s a very big gap. We will take the races one at a time, trying to win as many as possible. This will also involve taking more risks, and maybe we will pay a very high price for it, but there is no alternative.
The 2005 and 2006 world champion will therefore not give up before the season is over, invigorated by this victory. « We definitely do not give up, but we should not think about the championship: as Luca di Montezemolo said in Maranello, we keep our feet on the ground. »
The only shadow on the picture, this success comes at the end of a weekend marked by the FIA’s regulatory wanderings regarding blown diffusers and the Scuderia’s refusal to give its agreement for a return to the regulations applied in Valencia, at least until Sunday evening. « I haven’t thought much about the technical reasons behind the victory at the British Grand Prix, » assures the Ferrari driver. « Each race has its own story, and we know all too well how things can change from one track to another. There were definitely major improvements on the car, which means it seems easier to drive now and you can feel the car sticking to the track more than before, especially in fast corners. This means it has more aerodynamic downforce, which is the area where we were lagging the most behind our rivals. However, I don’t think the engine mapping changes were a factor: we were faster specifically in the sections where you hardly need to brake, which means it’s the car itself that is performing better. »
It will still be necessary to confirm the recent resurgence in form during the upcoming races, which predates the British Grand Prix, in order to dispel any lingering doubts.
