The manufacturers are considering a V6 for 2014

The regulations surrounding the future Formula One engine have been at the center of many discussions for several weeks, if not months. While it had been considered to move from the current V8 engines to a 1.6L 4-cylinder, some manufacturers, Ferrari and Mercedes, were not very enthusiastic about this proposal from the FIA.

For its part, Renault supports the 4-cylinder engine and is already working on its introduction in 2013. The French manufacturer even threatened to leave the discipline if the 4-cylinder engine was not introduced, while Cosworth would like to be informed as soon as possible about the future regulations.

Norbert Haug believes that the departure of a manufacturer would be a bad thing for F1. The vice-president of Mercedes Motorsport adds that it would be even better if one or two additional manufacturers joined the premier category.

According to *Autosport*, the manufacturers have reportedly agreed on a 1.6L turbo V6 that would be introduced in 2014. This engine would be paired with a greener KERS as desired by the FIA president. If the manufacturers agree, there is no reason why this V6 should not be accepted. Jean Todt recently stated that he was not against the idea of abandoning the V4, provided that all the teams agreed. If the engine manufacturers are on board, then the teams will be as well.

**UPDATE:** The F1 commission has just approved this engine project. The FIA could organize a vote on Monday to finalize this decision.
