Hamilton could have been severely penalized after Monaco

Disappointed by his poor performance in Monaco and tired of constantly being summoned by the FIA stewards, Lewis Hamilton had hinted that his skin color might not be unrelated to these incessant summons. These statements had rightfully shocked more than one observer.

The McLaren driver quickly apologized, explaining that it was a joke and that he didn’t actually think the stewards could be racist.

If the matter had ended there, the consequences of this verbal slip could have been much more significant for Lewis Hamilton.

Jean Todt, President of the International Automobile Federation, admits that the 2008 world champion narrowly avoided an exclusion for several Grand Prix races.

« I could have asked our court of justice to resolve the issue, but we never considered the case, » explains Jean Todt in the columns of the British daily newspaper The Guardian.

« Maybe it would have been a good decision to put him before the court and ban him for six Grand Prix. But he wrote to me and I responded, and the matter is closed, » adds the FIA president.
