Team Lotus can continue to be called Team Lotus

Judge Peter Smith delivered his verdict in the case between Group Lotus and 1Malaysia Racing Team regarding the use of the Lotus name. The High Court in London ruled in favor of Tony Fernandes’ team.

« We have won. I am over the moon. Team Lotus is ours. Our chassis name remains Lotus. No one can use the chassis name. We are the only Lotus. Team Lotus, » declares Fernandes on his Twitter.

« Team Lotus is very pleased that the trial concerning the rights to use the name Team Lotus has today reached a positive conclusion and that the team can now focus all its attention on its long-term challenge, » the team stated in a press release.

Lotus Renault GP, associated with Group Lotus, can also continue to use the Lotus name in Formula One. However, Group Lotus intends to appeal the decision made this afternoon to force Tony Fernandes’ team to change its name.

The judge declared that the Lotus team has the right to continue racing in Formula 1 under the name Team Lotus, but the effect of the decision is that only Group Lotus can use the name “Lotus” of its own accord in F1. Group Lotus is concerned about this aspect of the decision, which will lead to confusion among spectators and the general public. Consequently, Group Lotus has sought permission to appeal in order to clarify the right to use the Lotus brand in Formula 1 once and for all in the interest of the sport and the fans, explains Group Lotus.
