Button wishes to end his F1 career at McLaren Mercedes
Arriving at McLaren in 2010, following his first world title with Brawn GP in 2009, the British driver today announced his desire to finish his Formula One career with the Woking team.
In a recent interview with the English magazine Autosport, Jenson Button expressed his conviction to spend the remainder of his career with the McLaren team. A revelation that isn’t surprising given the excellent relationship between the English team and its driver. The statement also serves as a reminder that contract extension discussions will soon take place.
The 2009 world champion has a contract that runs until the end of 2012, but his comments suggest that the collaboration could extend several more years. “When my collaboration with McLaren is over, I will no longer race in F1. I am very happy here, I see no reason to look elsewhere. I drive for one of the best teams in the world. It’s a situation most drivers dream of being in. I could stay on the circuit for another three, five years. I don’t know yet,” says Button.
The McLaren team principal also spoke in the British magazine, and Whitmarsh admits that his driver’s statements are not a surprise: “If Jenson says he wants to stay with us for a few more years, I’m sure we can reach an agreement very quickly. He’s a great help to the team, I hope the contract renewal discussions will be easy and swift.”
