For his return to F1, Nico Hülkenberg had a successful qualifying session in Melbourne. The German driver will start from 9th place on the starting grid tomorrow. His teammate, Paul di Resta, will only start 15th after experiencing tire performance issues. The Indian team's goal will be to score points in tomorrow's race.

For the first qualifying session of the year, Toro Rosso managed to reach Q3 thanks to Daniel Ricciardo. For his F1 debut, Jean-Eric Vergne delivered a strong performance by securing 11th place just behind his teammate. The Frenchman hopes to score points in the race tomorrow.

The Sauber drivers failed to qualify for Q3 in Melbourne. Kobayashi clocked the 13th fastest time, but the Japanese driver hoped to do better, believing that the C31 had more to offer than this position. For Sergio Perez, things did not go as planned; he faced a gearbox problem and was thus unable to defend his chances in Q2, so he will start 17th. Both men intend to do everything to climb up the field tomorrow during the race.

Even though Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov were unable to outperform other cars besides the Marussias and the HRTs, the entire Caterham team is convinced they have made progress and narrowed the gap with teams that have been in F1 longer. The positions of the two drivers do not reflect this progress, but that is because the team was unable to prepare for qualifying as they wished.

The McLaren team drivers set the two best times in the first practice session before being more discreet in the second - to preserve their cars in the rain. Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton were therefore pleased with their cars, even though they know it's always difficult to know where everyone stands.

Ferrari was unable to prepare as it had hoped during pre-season testing. The Australian Grand Prix will therefore be an opportunity to continue the work. The two Maranello drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, know that the start of the season could be difficult, but they remain hopeful for the rest of the season.
