Heidfeld predicts more racing accidents in 2009

BMW-Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld fears a wave of on-track accidents at the start of the 2009 season as drivers will need to get used to the new aerodynamic elements. Indeed, these have been authorized to encourage overtaking.

The German, along with his teammate Robert Kubica and the team’s test driver Christian Klien, have already driven with the 2009 aerodynamic parts during the tests in Jerez and Barcelona last November and December. Heidfeld believes that drivers could be surprised during their battles on track.

« I think that could happen more often, especially at the start of the season because you need some time to adapt, » said Heidfeld about a possible increase in the number of accidents.

Sitting in the car, you can’t see the front wing. Of course, you know it’s there, but compared to previous years, a habit has been formed. At the beginning or in an emergency situation when you need to react without thinking, I believe there will be a lot more contact.

Moreover, he believes it is too early to pass any judgment on the effectiveness of the new aerodynamic regulations, particularly in terms of overtaking.

« It is no secret that this type of fins will be less affected by the winds. Driving will likely be easier. But for now, it is difficult to be 100% certain. »
