This eighth round of the 2009 Formula 1 championship in Great Britain saw a commanding domination by the Red Bull team powered by Renault. Sebastian Vettel secured his third race victory at the Silverstone circuit ahead of his teammate, Mark Webber. Rubens Barrichello in the Brawn limited the damage for the Brackley team by finishing third. Ferrari once again placed in the points with Felipe Massa in 4th and Kimi R\u00e4ikk\u00f6nen in 8th. Nico Rosberg (Williams) finished 5th and Jenson Button, in the second Brawn, only managed 6th. Jarno Trulli for Toyota earned the two points for 7th place. The BMWs, McLarens, and Renaults are struggling. Fisichella for Force India has never been closer to the first point for the team.<\/p>\n

More important now are the rankings. In the drivers’ championship, few changes. Jenson Button is still the clear leader with 61 points, but his closest competitors are catching up somewhat. His teammate, Barrichello, is still second, but the threat from the Red Bull drivers is now very real. The Brazilian has 41 points, Vettel 39, and Webber 35.5. The rest of the season between the two teams promises to be thrilling.<\/p>\n
Third force in the championship, the Toyota drivers have been left behind. Trulli is still 5th with 21.5 points, but the chase is on behind him as Massa in 6th and Rosberg in 7th have moved ahead of Timo Glock, who has dropped to 8th position. The drivers have 16, 15.5, and 13 points respectively. Fernando Alonso is now only 9th and sees R\u00e4ikk\u00f6nen dangerously closing in at 10th, just 1 point behind. Hamilton remains stuck in 11th place, as do Nick Heidfeld in 12th, Heikki Kovalainen in 13th, and the two Toro Rosso drivers, S\u00e9bastien Buemi in 14th and S\u00e9bastien Bourdais in 15th. The Frenchman continues to share this spot with Robert Kubica.<\/p>\n
In the constructors’ standings this time, only one change this week. Williams (15.5 points) takes the lead over McLaren (13 points) for the gain of 5th place. The Woking team thus falls to 6th position because Rosberg scored new points for the Grove team.<\/p>\n
At the top of the championship, no change then. Brawn GP crosses the 100-point mark with precisely 105 points. The important element is that Red Bull, the undeniable second force in this ranking, gains 9 points on the potential world champion. Good omens in the middle of the season. The Austrian team holds 74.5 points. Toyota, still 3rd, must watch out for Ferrari’s comeback in 4th position (34.5 against 26 points). Renault remains stuck in 7th place, just like BMW in 8th and Toro Rosso in 9th. The Faenza team must wait for the Hungarian GP at the end of July to obtain new elements that allow Red Bull to achieve such feats.<\/p>\n
